This is a Doeo. Doeos are sneaky, pink and square little things that have the tendency to appear suddenly in unexpected places. They disappear just as suddenly and as quickly and for no apparent reason whatsoever. Doeos are quick, nimble, cheerful and of course utterly evil.

In this action packed and spectacular game by Raitendo your objective is to gather 100 Doeos in 40 seconds over 5 splendidly designed levels until you find and capture the Doeo King (Apparently they have a King) and finally put an end to the madness.

To gather a Doeo, just touch it with the mouse pointer. This is a fun game to help you improve your hand/eye coordination and mousing skills. Important for any professional takes their on-line presence seriously. (Okay, okay, you got me; it's just an excuse to play a game on Friday :)

Mouse over the Doeo below and find the Play button to start the game.

Playing tip: You don;t have to click the Doeos, just touching them with the mouse is enough...

Anyway, cheers and thanks to Marcus Richert for this well Designed and very original game! Happy Weekend!

It turns out PayPal has changed the way language codes are working when you send a customer to make a payment. We've got it fixed now in 14Dayz so if you experienced a strange foreign language, that was PayPal on the fritz.

To help some fellow developers in the future who are wondering why is PayPal displaying the payment screen in the wrong language here is the missing documentation.

PayPal now uses country codes instead of language codes. Which is basically a false assumption by PayPal. It is often made by developers. In lots of countries two or more languages are spoken. Some countries even have two or more official languages.

PayPal uses the url parameter lc (language code)

lc =
US
GB
NL
DE
IT
FR

These are now country codes, before they used to be language codes so setting the English language would be done by putting
lc=en
. Now to set it to English just use
lc=US
for US residents or
lc=GB
for people from the United Kingdom. This will also pre-select the country in the pull down menu for your customer, so it's not all bad. :)
Also, it seems they now need the code to be in upper case where as before lower case seemed to work fine. Hope this helps.

<dc:subject>Process</dc:subject>

Because of our development process it is easy for us to work on the same project and even the same functionalities with the whole team together. As we explained before we use Stories to categorize and describe the necessary features for a project. Once we start on a story we split it up in tasks. Tasks are simple things comparable with todo's and can typically be accomplished by one pair of designers or programmers working together on the same computer.

Tasks that do not produce actual code, like server maintenance or registering a domain name can be carried out by individuals working solo of course.

Most tasks inside a story will however be development tasks and will be carried out by two people working together using a technique called Pair Programming. Using the orientation pattern it becomes really simple to switch pairs for developers.

For it to work correctly you need to understand about the TDD (Test Driven Development) cycle, here it is;

1. Write a test
2. Make it compile
3. Watch it fail
4. Write a little code
5. Make it pass
6. Refactor mercilessly
repeat until you cannot think of any more tests.

Now stories will typically be split up into tasks, for example:

* Write marketing text
* Design landing page
* Register domain name
* Code landing page HTML
* Submit a form and validate name and email
* Store validated name and email in database
* Submit a form and check if not already stored
* Give AJAX feedback on errors
* Give AJAX feedback on success
* Test in 3 target browsers
* Deploy database, cvs and apache
* Write a blog entry
* Add small advertisement to brains4all homepage
* Write a newsletter article

So you see this story includes a lot of different tasks, not all tasks are Design or Development tasks by a long shot. Still since those are most often carried out by a pair these are the most interesting when you're switching pairs halfway through a task. Let's look at these development tasks:

* Submit a form and validate name and email
* Store validated name and email in database
* Submit a form and check if not already stored
* Give AJAX feedback on errors
* Give AJAX feedback on success

Suppose I've finished with my registering the domain name tasks and I go and sit next to Serge. To help me orientate I can ask these simple questions:

Marko: Hi, what are you working on?
Serge: I'm working on Submit a form and check if not already stored.
Marko: So what are you doing?
Serge: I'm making this test here pass.
Marko: Okay, let's go!

By asking these simple questions I can quickly orientate myself inside the pair. I know what task we're working on in the story, I know in which part of the TDD cycle we are. For me this is enough to be able to dive in almost immediately and add value to the pair.

A funny side effect of this is that a task can be finished by completely different people that started it and almost everybody on the team may have worked on it. This helps to spread knowledge about the system throughout the team and helps you to keep code easy to change. Also by switching pairs frequently I've experienced a much higher sense of accomplishment and team effort. It also helps to keep a lot of energy in the team and if you change pair every 5-15 minutes it helps you prevent those Gung-Ho refactorings that seem to take forever.

What are your experiences with switching pairs?
How often do you switch and how do you orientate?

When you started up 14dayz this morning, did the feeling occur to you someone adjusted your monitor settings?

I can imagine you're thinking this way.
But, nothing could be further from the truth.

We've been getting praise for the Design of the user interface from day one, seeing as this is what has made 14Dayz simple to use and easy to get in to.

Still, there is always room for improvement. You've requested more than anything that you'd want slightly better contrast in the user interface.

And we think you were right!

So here it is, making for an even better experience for you and your team. In case you are already getting used to the new contrast or you did not notice any improvement at all, here's a little reminder.

We'd like to know what you think of this improvement and if this makes the interface visible for those of you who are not blessed with state of the art monitors or those who have to work in poor lighting conditions.

Thank you!

If you'd like to sign up for your own 14Dayz account, here's a little something to help you get started:

Sign up for any paid 14Dayz account by clicking the "Subscribe" button on the plan of your choice on the sign up page

Complete the sign up form

Enter billing information through PayPal

Get $ 10 USD credit on your next bill!

What does this mean?

For example: If you sign up today for a new Personal Plan, you get a free trial of 1 month, then you pay $ 5 USD for your second month which will be credited to your PayPal account as well as your $ 5 USD third month payment. Essentially you can enjoy a personal plan for three months for free, to see if it is right for you. Or you can save $ 10 USD on your next payment of the Plan of your choice.

And there's no catch. You can cancel any time you want. If you decide to cancel you do not have to pay any more.

Sign up today and pocket a tenner!

"Right now, social networks are closed platforms," Zuckerberg told the assembled entrepreneurs. "Today we are going to end that."

This opened the door for third party developers to develop, deploy and exploit their applications on the highly successful facebook social network.

Jesse Farmer who keeps track of how well and viral facebook applications are doing on Appaholic is quoted to say:

One attribute that's death to an app is complexity. Facebook and all its homegrown applications are relatively simple; those who create something that requires too much thought or explanation quickly run into trouble.

Anita Campbell, the long time enthusiastic host of Small Business Radio writes about: “What it means to be a virtual business”.

…virtual small businesses do not look like smaller versions of large corporations. Instead, they’re more like ad hoc composites of people coming together temporarily for a common purpose. There’s a fluidity to the business structure.
It’s hard to put your finger on where the business is located. In fact, location ceases to be important…

Interesting to see how technology helps more businesses to embrace and thrive by application of this concept. Brains4All is proud to provide simple tools to help virtual businesses excel, tools for groups of loosely connected individuals that collaborate on a professional basis. 14Dayz for example is great for teams that are geographically distributed and still need a central place for logging their hours.

Check out the archive of Past Shows at Small Business Radio for a wealth of valuable tips and advice for small businesses on marketing, sales, tools and more. I love Anita's show, she's such a passionate host!
